Bob Mintzer Big Band

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Bob Mintzer is a tenor saxophonist, but particularly a composer, arranger, educator and leader of his own big band. He is also member of the Yellowjackets, a jazz fushion group.

I played the CD The First Decade by Bob Mintzer Big Band. ( DMP CD-510 )

Bob Mintzer, born in 1953, played with artists like Tito Puente, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, That Jones and Mel Lewis, Sam Jones and Eddie Palmieri; all musicians who had their own bands. In 1984 he started with his own big band and recorded 11 albums so far on the DMP label (Digital Music Productions). Two remarkable members of that band are the Brecker Brothers, Michael and Randy. In 1990 he became a member of the Yellowjackets and nowadays he is active as a scholar, giving clinics and as a saxophone instructor at Manhattan School of Music in New York City. In recent years he made records with the GRP All-Star Big Band too.

The DMP record The First Decade by Bob Mintzer Big Band contains 12 tracks selected from seven albums Mintzer made in the period 1984 up to 1994.

As I had never heard of Bob Mintzer ( I knew the music of the Yellowjackets) it was my first introduction to his music. As we discussed big band music in several blogs ( Stan Kenton and Gil Evans) Bob Mintzer is different from the more traditional style of big band music. Bob Mintzer serves a fresh creative contemporary style of music. I hear a lot of fushion elements in it and I don 't prefer that, but at the other hand the sound of the band is clear and has a transparancy I miss so often in big band recordings.

It is a recording to play at full speed when the neighbours are not at home. It is a CD to play more then once to concede its different layers to the listener.

Enjoy a performance of the band at the 2006 IAJE meeting at the Sheraton Hotel in NYC (13 Jan 2006).

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
